New Year... New Job!

So the new year has already shown me a lot and we have only ventured into 13 days of January so far!

For me, the biggest update has to be finding a new job. There was mention from a family friend of a job that was available at the school she works at. A TA job, of which I would be teaching the children English, grammar and creative writing... It sounded so scary and for someone who is just about finding their feet and settling into life after uni, it was terrifying. But having thought about the opportunity for a good few days, I realized that I would have to be an idiot not to take such a job. The benefits for sure outweighed the cons!

So, tomorrow is my first day at the school and I can't lie, I am bricking it! It's a lot different to the job I've been currently doing, but it is a step towards my career choice for the future! However, working in a pub has been really interesting! Not only have I build relationships with fellow staff but I have gained so much confidence and skills that I will take away from that job. I can honestly say it has been amazing, despite the long shifts and miserable customers, I will miss it,but onwards and upwards as they say!

I think working in such an environment as I did, I learnt to understand people and everyday it was interesting to see the types of people around me. I found that people can be very demanding, but at the same time, I found that people can be highly appreciative of your service. Working as a waitress/ barmaid is a deceiving job. A lot of the time people think it's an easy trade, benefiting from the nice amount of tips it brings with it. However, they couldn't be more wrong. The sheer demanding nature of some people really does bring the job down. I think a lot of the time you have to be string willed, patient and sometimes very very calm. From my experience there are times where it has been a struggle, during the Christmas period it was literal hell on earth. But as someone mentioned the other day, getting through a busy Christmas period in that trade will set you up for anything!

Furthermore, I will miss the several characters I found myself witness to. The memorable characteristics for several reasons, good or bad, I will remember them! In any job you will take things away from you everyday and for me, I took away the great personalities I found within the pub. In fact, they will come in handy for a writing exercise... Writing about the many characters around the area could prove to be a wise writing exercise for me!
